סיפורו של מחסום	a Checkpoint’s Story

Over a span of six years, Neta Efrony, a member of MachsomWatch (Checkpoints Watch), documented an Israeli military Checkpoint – on the road between East Jerusalem and Ramallah – which grew and expanded into becoming a Terminal.

Kalandia’s Checkpoint does not separate between Arabs and Jews; it separates between Palestinians and Palestinians. The film, shot in a cinéma vérité style, is an authentic and disturbing testimony to the daily struggle of Palestinians who wish to continue their routine lives, on their way to work, education, medical care or religious reasons.

VII. Upcoming Tours

I. Archaeology and National Heritage Sites
The Israeli government’s National Heritage Program includes 37 archaeological sites. The program detaches these sites from their overall historical context and instead makes them part of an ideological campaign to augment the dominant national (i.e. Jewish) ethos. This selective conservation of the collective memory of the nation inherently and deliberately ignores anything that is not consistent with its ideological perspective – whether this be thousands of years of Jewish life outside of Israel’s borders, or thousands of years of non-Jewish life within these borders.
We believe that all archaeological sites are an integral part of the overall local heritage, many of them being universal cultural treasures that are not the exclusive property of a particular nation or religion.
Following are two links dealing with this subject: http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasite/spages/1152211.html

II. Damages caused by the excavations of tunnels
On March 1, a four-meter-long pit appeared in the Wadi Hilwa neighborhood, in the parking area just above the mosque. According to the engineer sent by the Jerusalem municipality, the pit was a result of the archaeological excavations of the tunnels carried out by the Israeli Antiquities Authority.

We have been opposing the digging of tunnels for the last few months since it contravenes archaeological practice and all ethical principles that apply to archaeological excavations. In fact, it also entails the destruction of antiquities. We hope the tunnels excavations will stop before someone will get hurt and maybe this pit will be a warning sign to all the authorities and organizations responsible for the damages.

A link to the Jerusalem Municipality engineer’s talk with the local residents: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbESX5K5sWc
More information on: http://www.silwanic.net

III. New interactive map of archaeological excavations and tourists sites at our website
We have recently added to our site a map and accompanying information about the excavation and tourist areas in the village of Silwan: http://www.alt-arch.org/map.php

This new material allows visitors to our website to see for themselves the extent of the excavations being conducted in the village and their impact on the areas taken over for these purposes.

IV. Closing of the investigation of the shooting of Ahmed Qaraeen
Last September, one of our regular hosts in the village of Silwan, Ahmed Kar’in, was shot and wounded by a soldier on vacation. Only slowly and with great difficulty is Ahmed recovering from the wound to his leg. Recently we learned that the police investigation of the case has been closed for lack of culpability or, in other words, the police has accepted the shooter’s version of the incident.

V. Givati Parking Lot excavations
Despite the call by us and others to leave in place in the Givaati parking lot a find made from the Moslem Period (dated to the Abbasid Caliphate – the 8-9 centuries CE), we have learned that the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) has decided to remove this stratum in order to excavate the strata beneath it. The IAA maintains that archaeological finds from this period are sparse at this location. However, it’s important to note that, based on excavations that were conducted in other parts of the Givaati parking lot, the Moslem Period stratum here was both significant and rich in finds.
We believe that it is worthy to display to the public all the strata uncovered in the Givaati parking lot, particularly the later strata for which no representative display has been left in any of the other excavated areas at the site. In this way the site can serve as a tangible evidence for the multiplicity of cultures in Jerusalem’s past.

VI. Volunteers needed
If you’d like to volunteer to help with translation, or legal issues, or participate in any other activity, please contact us by email: info@alt-arch.org

VII. Upcoming tours
The archaeological tour “From Shiloah to Silwan” offers a unique experience of the “City of David” archaeological site located in the Palestinian village of Silwan in East Jerusalem.
This is an unusual tour because along with an introduction to the archaeological splendor of the site, it also introduces the visitor to the role of archaeology in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its impact on the residents living near the site.
The tour is guided by an archaeologist and village residents.

The English tour will take place on Friday, March 19, at 1 pm
The Hebrew tour will take place on Saturday, March 20, at 2 pm

http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasite/spages/1152211.html

II.

III.
http://www.alt-arch.org/map_heb.php

VII.

We will stand there, outside and inside the court, to show our support to Ezra and protest against the continual attempt by the Israeli authorities to silence legitimate protest by spurious accusations.

In March 2009, the judge Eilata Ziskind of the Jerusalem Magistrate’s (Peace) Court found Ezra Nawi guilty of assaulting a police officer and participation in a riot during a house demolition of a tin shack in the West Bank Palestinian village of Um el-Hir in the south Hebron hills, back in 2007. Nawi protested against the demolition by lying in front of a bulldozer, and later running into the shack before its demolition. Although throughout the whole incident Ezra kept to his principle of non-violent protest, in the end, he found himself arrested and charged with the aforementioned accusations that eventually led to his conviction based on the sole testimonies of two police officers who claimed that Nawi attacked them inside the shack. In addition, the judge Ziskind ruled that Ezra’s behaviour exceeded the limits of legitimate protest and therefore convicted him of rioting.

The District Court will hear Ezra’s appeal and will decide whether or not Ezra indeed participate in a riot, and peruse the reasons that led Ziskind to believe the police testimonies and not Ezra’s.

The Committee Supporting Ezra added, “Ezra’s trial is a stark example of the Police’s and the DA’s depraved use of severe charges such as assaulting a police officer and participating in a riot in order to silence and punish activists who take part in demonstrations inside the boundaries of legitimate protest. We hope that the district court tomorrow will perceive and rectify the series of shortcomings that are alarmingly apparent in Ezra’s conviction. Ziskind’s interpretation of the right to protest might serve as a dangerous precedent that will cripple and paralyze this vital right in a democratic society.”

The hearing will take place tomorrow, March 3, in the Jerusalem District Court, Salah Ed-din Street, at 13.30.

Dear Colleagues and Supporters,The petition to take archaeology out of the hands of settler groups in Wadi Hilweh/City of David has garnered hundreds of signatures from academic institutions around the world. It has provided important and solid backing to the efforts made on the ground by Emek Shaveh and others to stem the tide of politicized excavation in the City of David, provoking considerable concern in the Israel Antiquities Authority. The extent of this concern can be gauged by the apologetics offered by the IAA for their involvement, as well as by their vicious attacks on Emek Shaveh archaeologists. These have included the forced resignation from the IAA of one of our number, the public denunciation by the IAA of the WAC-Ramallah Intercongress visit to Silwan, and a diatribe aimed at another Emek Shaveh archaeologist by the head of the IAA at an academic conference. The impact of the petition on the work itself, however, has been limited. While we do sense that work in the Giv’ati parking lot, where late strata were being dismantled in a drive to bedrock in order to make room for a parking tower, has slowed, it has not stopped. And while an increasing number of Israeli archaeologists are making their voices heard in opposition to the IAA policies in the historic basin of Jerusalem, the heads of that institution are increasingly caught up in collaborations with the well-funded partisan groups who underwrite the excavations.
Also, as time goes by, dubious professional practices that are the inevitable outcome of ethical indifference are becoming more and more pronounced in all parts of the excavated area.

In this context, we would like to inform you of several new causes for concern:

1. Tunnels and galleries
The plan to create tunnels for pedestrian tourist traffic between Wadi Hilweh and the
Old City has led to a revival of gallery excavation—a common 19th century practice abandoned with the onset of stratigraphic excavation. New galleries have been excavated in all parts of the City of David, and the plans for further tunneling suggest that galleries have now been recognized by the IAA as acceptable archaeological procedure.
Currently active gallery excavations include:

1. Excavations around the Gihon spring. A gallery has been cut westward toward the rock scarp upon which the Middle Bronze Age fortifications excavated by Kenyon in the 1960s rest (see photos). In addition, another gallery is being excavated on the north side of the spring area.

2. Excavations along the Early Roman street that climbs from the Siloam Pool area toward the upper city on the east flank of the central valley. These include two tunnels excavated on either side of the mosque that flanks the pool.
3. Extensive excavation is now taking place in connection with the large drain that is associated with the street, beginning midway up the slope and extending up towards the Giv‘ati parking lot. The excavations were presented in the past as mere clearance of debris from the drain, but they may well extend beyond it.

Excavators for the IAA have stated that the gallery excavations tunnel through unstratified midden tips which have been methodically excavated in the past and can therefore be removed summarily. (One might compare this to the removal of Temple Mount fills by the Muslim Waqf in 1999, which generated severe criticism from those who now are responsible for the tunneling in Wadi Hilweh). We would suggest that the branding of all the material as unstratified will be a self-fulfilling prophecy as long as tunneling continues.

Here is what William Dancey says about tunneling in Brian Fagan’s Oxford Companion to Archaeology (1996; p.230):

“Early archaeological excavation was little more than mining for artifacts, and engineers were frequently consulted for advice on tunneling into deep deposits. Although a minerals extraction approach such as this continues today among vandals and uneducated collectors, professional archaeology has changed radically. Where at one time little or no attention was given to the spatial relationships or context of things in an archaeological deposit, today a set of rigorous standards guides archaeological digging. At the core of these controls is the need to record finds within a local grid system and to document the soils and sediments containing the finds.”

There is no doubt that today, engineers are the most sought-after experts in the City of David, providing the knowhow and miles of steel girders to shore up the subterranean excavations, as indeed described by El’ad’s David Beeri:

“Behind this wall there are 18 meters of mountain, and up above are Arab houses [that might collapse]. I want to get to the bottom of the mountain, to find the cistern … So we start to excavate cautiously, supporting all this with iron support beams that hold up the mountain and the houses. We found ourselves with 5 kilometers of welded iron beams in there, sheer madness. We drove the price of iron up.”

For the full record of Be’eri regarding the excavations, click here.
2. The El’ad-supported development plan for Wadi Hilweh
A new development plan initiated by the Jerusalem Municipality purports to serve the interest of all inhabitants of Wadi Hilweh, as well as those of the antiquities of the City of David. It transpires that El’ad actually funded some of expenses of the architects employed by the municipality in preparing the plan. This has led to a petition at the Jerusalem District Court, still pending.

Among the troubling provisions of the plan are at least 14 new houses and three “public buildings” to be built by settlers within the confines of the ancient mound. This establishes without a doubt the main priority of El’ad and highlights the disingenuousness of their claim to be protectors of the antiquities of the site. Also, extensive parking areas and new roads planned in and around Wadi Hilweh will convert the neighborhood into an urban island, entirely given over to the needs of the tourist industry (as envisioned and managed by El’ad). Almost no provisions are made for the needs of the present inhabitants of the area. See here maps of the plan.

3. Givati
As we suspected all along, the Givati parking lot excavations—officially described as test excavations in order to determine the presence of significant antiquities—are little more than an elaborate prologue to the construction of a new visitors’ center and tourist hub. All attempts at any kind of transparent academic oversight of the planned construction have been blocked. The excavation of the third quadrant of the parking lot has begun. Interestingly, the first quadrant was excavated to a depth of about 15 meters, removing all layers down to Early Roman; the second quadrant stopped one layer above—in the Late Roman stratum (although soundings were carried to a greater depth) Where will the third quadrant stop? Perhaps it is not too late to call for a full excavation and preservation of the remaining portions of the Early Islamic strata. This would be a golden opportunity to undo some of the damage already inflicted and to convert the entire operation into a positive demonstration of the power of a multicultural approach to the antiquities of Jerusalem.

The first two quadrants The third quadrant prepared for excavation

We therefore ask you to join in support of our call to change the way archaeology is being conducted in the City of David:

We, the undersigned, renew our support for or join the call to take archaeology in the City of David out of the hands of Elad. We have found new causes for concern in the conduct of archaeological work in this area, with increasing evidence for doubtful professional practices that are the inevitable result of the untenable ethical position implicit in the ongoing excavations. We call upon the Israel Antiquities Authority and the Israel Nature and National Parks Authority to take the lead in transforming the antiquities of Jerusalem into an instrument of mutual respect and understanding between the different communities in Jerusalem, including the residents of Wadi Hilweh in Silwan, and between the different cultures to which they are heirs. We call upon these organizations to put a stop to the overt political exploitation of the antiquities of Jerusalem.

Bustan Qaraaqa (the Tortoise Garden) is a community permaculture project, based in the West Bank town of Beit Sahour (Shepherds’ Fields), close to the city of Bethlehem, and a five minute drive from Jerusalem.

The aim of the project is to propagate a grassroots environmental movement in the Palestinian Territories to address the problems of food insecurity and environmental degradation that threaten the well-being of the population; problems that are going unaddressed as a result of the ongoing Israeli military occupation which impedes effective development.

We feel that where governments and development agencies are failing, perhaps individuals and communities can succeed if only they recognize their own power to deal with the problems that are facing them.

Working closely with our neighbours, we are creating a model permaculture farm, to serve as a center for experimentation with and demonstration of cheap and easy techniques for sustainable living and food production. In addition we are carrying out environmental education activities with all sectors of the local community, and supporting people in implementing their own permaculture initiatives and realising their environmental rights.

The site also serves as a guesthouse for international visitors, who are invited to volunteer with the project, working both at Bustan Qaraaqa itself and with members of the local community to learn about permaculture techniques and the political-environmental situation in Palestine.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Three weeks ago I wrote the following words after a traumatic night in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarakh. Although originally sent out only to our Israeli lists, they have been posted in several places and we have been asked why they were not sent out to all of our supporters. If you have already read this, you can scroll down to some additional updates and action suggestions below:

Armageddon, Straight Ahead

It is 1:30 am, and I just came back from Sheikh Jarakh –I see Jerusalem in flames, and know than my words will not succeed in conveying the horror of what I saw or the dread in my heart.

Today the court ruled in favor of the settlers who had taken over part of yet another family’s home in Sheikh Jarakh. Because a lawyer for some of the families in the 1980′s recognized Jewish ownership in return for protected tenant’s status, the addition the El-Kurd family made to their home was deemed illegal. They had to ask permission from the “owners” to do it. Did the court order the addition demolished or a fine paid? Of course not. Why, anybody should be able to understand that the only logical thing to do was to let settlers move in to the extension.

All day the tension was palpable, sometimes breaking into physical violence. When I arrived in the evening, people warily looked at me to determine if I was friend or foe, until I got close enough to be recognized and greeted in Arabic the newcomers who didn’t recognize me. Palestinians backed by Israelis and internationals huddled around fires, keeping a watchful eye out, as Arab music reminded settlers huddled inside their new acquisition just where they were. Nasser Ghawi is closing in on his fourth month in a pitiful lean to across the street from where 6 settler families lived in his home, with a constant stream of visitors in and out. He asked me if there was any hope left. Usually full of optimism in even the most difficult situations, I could only mouth some meaningless platitudes about looking for new legal options. Yesterday Maya, our staff person who spends the most time in Sheikh Jarakh, asked me where justice was. I didn’t have an answer for her either.

All of a sudden a group of settlers and their supporters comes to the Ghawi home amidst catcalls and insults hurled by Palestinians seeking an outlet for their seething anger and pain. The settler group moves closer and wants to come in to congratulate those within. Everybody jumps to their feet and the gate is slammed shut, but there are settlers already inside as well as outside. I am amazed that no fights break out. The taunts get louder and more vicious. Some spit at the settlers. In similar situations I have urged Palestinians to calm down, but here I felt that I had no right and that it would do no good. The only comment I responded to was when somebody said in Arabic that they wished Hitler had finished the job. I tried to think of what I could do if things escalated further, and didn’t come up with any answers. The settlers keep staring at me and my kippah. They don’t get it.

The most terrifying indication that we were at the brink of conflagration was that the police were did not wade violently into the Palestinians or arrest people for having the wrong look on their faces, as so often happens in Sheikh Jarakh. I even saw one of the officers trying to clear the way for settlers to come in and out snarl at one of the settlers and tell him that he dare not touch anybody. In other situations I would have been pleasantly surprised, but here this was an indication that the police also knew that they were sitting on top of a volcano about to blow.

Maya arrives. I say to her, “It will be a miracle if the night passes without an explosion.”

Every few minutes a new group of settlers comes to look, to smile. At one point a settler inside comes demanding that the Palestinians turn off the blaring music. I have visions of what will happen if he pulls a plug or smashes something. I remind him of the Jewish teaching, “You don’t rebuke somebody in the midst of their sorrow. “ He goes back in, as Palestinians shout and rattle the windows. One woman addresses at length the Druze officer guarding the door to the captured room. I can only imagine what she is saying. What is said in Hebrew again and again is, “This is your system of law?” I can only answer what I learned years ago, “Not everything that is “legal” is just.”

The worst of it is that I don’t know what to suggest. Israel’s democracy has failed up until now. International pressure has failed up until now. The activist community has failed up until now.

Although his worst predictions that their actions would cause the inhabitants of the land to rise up and destroy them never came true, our ancestor Jacob cursed his sons Simeon and Levi until his dying day for their violent and brutal act of revenge in this week’s Torah portion, Their weapons are tools of lawlessness. Let not my person be included in their council,, Let not my being be counted in their assembly. For when angry they slay men, and when pleased they maim oxen.”(Genesis 45:6)

I hope that I too am wrong. What is the big deal here? Be angry and upset, but why so worried about one more incident of helpless Palestinian fury directed at an Israeli injustice? Why should activists spend a sleepless cold Jerusalem night huddling in front of a fire? Why should the political echelons and the courts shake themselves out of their torpor? Can’t the international community feel satisfied with itself over it’s “strong protest?”

Because this is Jerusalem. As I wrote a week and a half ago, I see a Palestinian anger burning so strong that, unlike what usually happens, neither the threat of arrest or the use of overwhelming force is a deterrent. That means a third intifada. That means that the fact that the world community forcing Israel into a settlement freeze (perhaps) may be too little too late. That means that the Obama administration remains a laughingstock at best, and in many quarters the U.S. is again the subject of scorn and derision.

I see Jerusalem in flames – I see Armageddon straight ahead. I see everywhere complacent alarm. I know that tens will answer our call to demonstrate today, but we need hundreds and thousands. The diplomats will write urgent reports, but we need effective pressure. The peace and human rights community will say that this is terrible, but we need them to come out of their homes. The politicians will say that it is a matter for the courts and that they can’t interfere, while the courts will say that the law takes precedence over their personal conscience. The police will prepare emergency plans. If nothing changes (olam c’minhago noheg), Jerusalem will burn.

Postscript 9:45 am: Massive forces arrived a short while ago and again forcibly tore down the Rawi lean-to opposite their home. Just before I left last night a police officer who didn’t know Nasser (I guess the police sent in new forces, knowing that the clearly biased officers from the local police station would add fuel to the fire), asked him for his ID. I said “You don’t know this is Nasser Rawi who has been sitting here on the sidewalk for 3 months?” The officer asked if I was there to help Nasser, and I said “Yes.” The officer replied, “He doesn’t need your help.” My first thought was, “What do you mean a family expelled from their home and sitting on the sidewalk for 3 months doesn’t need our help?” Afterwards, I thought to myself, “We all need help.” *******************

ACT

Things do not seem quite as desperate as when I first wrote these words. However, I continue to be haunted by the fact that those of us who were predicting the second intifada a year and a half before it happened failed to convince enough people of how tense the situation was. Seeing the warning signs today of a potential third intifada, I know we must do better this time. We are currently discussing with our partners in RHR-North America what we can ask you to do if you too are disturbed by what you read. In the meantime, you may wish to write to Prime Minister Netanyahu, http://www.pmo.gov.il/PMOEng/PM/Write+to+PM/, or Mayor Nir Barkat, mayor@jerusalem.muni.il. Those of you who are U.S. citizens may wish to participate in J Street and Brit Tzedek V’Shalom’s campaign asking Secretary of State Clinton to redouble her efforts to change Israeli behavior in E. Jerusalem, http://www.jstreet.org/campaigns/current.

************

ADDITIONAL UPDATES

I myself am unfortunately just back from the police station, after flyers were distributed in mailboxes in my neighborhood and taped to lampposts by settlers from Shiloh who were angry because we accompanied Palestinian farmers last week to lands that Shiloh is trying to take over. The flyers called on people to “talk to me” to dissuade us from “provoking” and “causing Jews to be arrested and indicted as aggressors.”

As much as we would truly prefer to protect human rights by inspiring people to uphold our highest Jewish values, unfortunately we sometimes must also “provoke” in order to effect change. If there is a silver lining to this incident, perhaps these flyers are an opportunity to invite my neighbors to a parlor meeting.

Inspiring and provoking is not limited to Shiloh. For those of you who would like the latest updates regarding our last ditch campaign to stop the Israeli Wisconsin Plan from being expanded to the entire country, what is happening with the residents of Bir El-Id returned to their homes after 10 years, the olive tree planting season, East Jerusalem, and/or our educational programs, you can go to http://rhr.org.il/index.php?language=en. You can also write to info@rhr.israel.net, and ask to receive the weekly updates and d’var Torah we send out to our Israeli members, volunteers and supporters. You can also click http://rhr.org.il/page.php?name=article&id=25&language=en to read my remarks upon receiving the Yeshayahu Leibovitch prize and/or http://rhr.org.il/page.php?name=article&id=23&language=en to get a sense of a week with RHR.

This morning the Jerusalem municipality demolished three more houses in the Palestinian neighborhoods of Abu Tor and Beit Hanina and 40 people were displaced.

One of the houses in Abu-Tor was a 70 square meter house belonging to the Shuweiki family and was a home to 12 residents. The Father of the family fainted twice during the demolition, and was hospitalized. The second house in Abu-Tor was 80 square meter house home to the Al-Qawasmi family of 6 members. The two families received an order from the municipal representative to clear out all the rubble that used to be their home within a week or else they would receive a hefty fine. The third house that was demolished by the Jerusalem Municipality, measured 150 square meters and was located in the neighborhood of Beit Hanina. It was the home of the Rajaby family, providing shelter to 22 familiy members including at least ten children. The family received the demolition order only this morning, leaving the family with insufficient time to organise alternative housing opportunities or to remove all their belongings in time. Two people, the father and one of the sons, were arrested and 2 others were injured during the demolition. A forth house adjacent to the Shuweiki family house was damaged during the demolition.

After numerous incidents of home demolitions and evictions in East Jerusalem right before Ramadan and the Jewish High Holidays, the Municipality of Jerusalem has clearly reinstated its illegal policy of house demolitions in East Jerusalem. Today’s demolitions add up to at least 12 demolitions within the course of only 3 weeks, thereby clearly stating the Municipality’s discriminatory discourse.

We urge you to join us in making an end to these racist measures in order to achieve a sustainable and just peace. Please contact your parliamentarians and congressional representatives to demand their action on the issue. If you require any more information on house demolitions in East Jerusalem or ideas of how to get involved, please contact the ICAHD office.

1. Shooting in Silwan opposite the entrance to the site of the City of David, update

In the previous newsletter, we reported an incident of shooting which occurred at the entrance to the site of the City of David in Silwan, in which an Israeli young man shot towards two Palestinian residents on 11/9/09. Our friend, Ahmed Qaraeen, a member of the residents’ committee who was wounded in the shooting, was released from the hospital two weeks ago after undergoing an operation on his leg; he is now facing an extended period of rehabilitation. The other wounded person, the child Amir Froukh, who was only lightly wounded in his leg, has totally recovered. Below is a film clip describing the whole incident:

An additional film clip about Ahmed and the general situation in Silwan(In Hebrew): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF2Fjp7ufQU

2. Criticism of the Antiquity Authority becomes an issue of public debate

The Archaeological Authority has been forced to respond: At the Archaeological Conference on New Research on Jerusalem, which took place on 15/10/09 at the Hebrew University, the Director of the Antiquity Authority devoted most of his opening words to a response to the criticism which has recently been voiced concerning the operations of the Authority. In his speech, he related to our activities in general and, specifically, to the article of Dr. Rafi Greenberg, “Quick Archaeology” in Jerusalem, which was published in the Ha’Aretz newspaper:

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1119641.html

The opening words of Shuka Dorfman, the Director of the Antiquity Authority:

Criticism of senior archaeologists concerning the increase in building activity and the co-operation with the Antiquity Authority:

During the Conference, criticism was voiced concerning the work of the Authority and the situation of archaeology in East Jerusalem by the leading archaeologists Prof. Yoram Tzafrir, Prof. Amos Kloner and Hillel Geva. The first speaker was Prof. Yoram Tzafrir. His words were aimed primarily at the building plans for the “Beit Ha-Libah (House of the Heart)”, a three-story building sponsored by the Fund for the Tradition of the Western Wall, within the area of the plaza. Following the discussions at the Conference, several articles and op-ed pieces were published indicating that the subject has begun to be an issue of public debate.

Here are some film clips from the Conference itself, and links to discussions of the issue:

3. Publication of the remarks of the Director of the El’ad organization concerning the excavation under Palestinian houses and how he “fooled” the Antiquity Authority.

Recently, Ha’Aretz newspaper published a transcription of a recorded conversation with David Beri, the Director of the El’ad organization. He reveals the way in which the excavations were carried out in Beit Ha-Ma’ayan. Excavating outside of the permitted area, without engineering supervision and while endangering the lives of the local residents are only a few of the methods which Beri describes in the recording. Listen to his words here:

III.

The niece of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is to brave checkpoints, soldiers and blistering sun to cycle across the Middle East from October 9.

Eight-year-old Alexandra Darby will be joined by her mother Lauren Booth and 15 other cyclists riding from Amman, Jordan, all the way to Jerusalem.

Her uncle Tony Blair, now Middle East Envoy for the Quartet, has so far made no comment on the planned trip.

Alexandra’s journey will be more than a brief sojourn in a comfortable Jerusalem hotel.

She will witness first-hand the devastating fallout of a 61-year conflict.

The Peace Envoy’s niece has taken 2 weeks off school to stay with families on unrecognised land whose homes are regularly threatened with demolition by the Israeli military.

She will visit refugee camps in Jordan, home to Palestinians forced from their land in 1948.

The group of cyclists will track the path of the eight-metre-high Separation Barrier as it snakes through the West Bank.

The fourteen-day cycle will take Alexandra through an historical and tragic landscape, finishing in Jerusalem, the epicentre of centuries-old conflicts.

Notes:

The Peace Cycle is a British non-profit organisation that arranged two historic London to Jerusalem Bike Rides in 2004 and 2006, a ride from Amman to Jerusalem in 2008, and a ride to the European Parliament in Brussels in March 2009 where it handed a petition to MEPs signed by 20,000 EU citizens.

The 2009 Peace Cycle is raising funds for the Oyooni Mobile Health Clinic, which delivers specialised eye care to diabetes and glaucoma patients in the Occupied Palestinian Territories: www.oyooni.org
