Bustan Qaraaqa (the Tortoise Garden) is a community permaculture project, based in the West Bank town of Beit Sahour (Shepherds’ Fields), close to the city of Bethlehem, and a five minute drive from Jerusalem.

The aim of the project is to propagate a grassroots environmental movement in the Palestinian Territories to address the problems of food insecurity and environmental degradation that threaten the well-being of the population; problems that are going unaddressed as a result of the ongoing Israeli military occupation which impedes effective development.

We feel that where governments and development agencies are failing, perhaps individuals and communities can succeed if only they recognize their own power to deal with the problems that are facing them.

Working closely with our neighbours, we are creating a model permaculture farm, to serve as a center for experimentation with and demonstration of cheap and easy techniques for sustainable living and food production. In addition we are carrying out environmental education activities with all sectors of the local community, and supporting people in implementing their own permaculture initiatives and realising their environmental rights.

The site also serves as a guesthouse for international visitors, who are invited to volunteer with the project, working both at Bustan Qaraaqa itself and with members of the local community to learn about permaculture techniques and the political-environmental situation in Palestine.

1. Maps of the archaeological excavations in East Jerusalem and the West Bank
For the first time, a searchable map recording archaeological sites in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is available on the web. The map also has a Google Maps interface.
The maps provide a source of information on surveys and excavations conducted under Israeli license in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, from 1967 to 2007. It encompasses nearly 6000 archaeological features and 1600 excavations.

2. Information about the book: Israeli Archaeological Activity in the West Bank 1967–2007: A Sourcebook
by Raphael Greenberg and Adi Keinan
This publication provides the first unified source of information on surveys and excavations conducted under Israeli license in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, from 1967 to 2007. It encompasses nearly 6000 archaeological features, 1600 excavations, and 1000 referenced publications. Derived from published and unpublished sources, the database provides as full an account as possible, within the authors’ limitations, of the extent of archaeological knowledge accumulated by Israeli research since 1967 in the occupied territories. Prepared under the auspices of the Israeli-Palestinian Archaeology Working Group, it is an important source of information on the cultural inventory of the Central Highlands of ancient Israel/Palestine and a contribution to the ongoing project of recording and mapping the deep history of the Near East.

3. Upcoming Tours
The archaeological tour “From Shiloah to Silwan” offers a unique experience of the “City of David” archaeological site located in the Palestinian village of Silwan in East Jerusalem.
This is an unusual tour because along with an introduction to the archaeological splendor of the site, it also introduces the visitor to the role of archaeology in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its impact on the residents living near the site.
The tour is guided by an archaeologist and village residents.

The English tour will take place on Friday, January 22; at 1 pm
The Hebrew tour will take place on Saturday, January 15; at 1 pm

29 December 2009 – 8 January 2010

In an increasingly globalized world, it is often the case that quantity of information is privileged over quality. We often deal with cultures without knowing their histories or the things that we have in common with them. We generalize about “East” and “West” forgetting that we have several traditions, experiences, and values to share. Talking about a cultural conflict, or a “clash of civilizations”, is an overly simplistic way of characterizing differences, leaving historical facts, experiences, and common desires for interaction far from consideration. Mutual understanding is the basis on which relationships have to be built, because all “sides” share values such as respect, tolerance and peace. Stereotypes should therefore not prevent people from approaching the “other” world, nor limit a constructive dialogue about values, ideals and our common future on this planet.

The cave dwellers of Bir al-Ein is between two extreme and particularly violent “outposts”, have been driven out of their village in 2000. Following a long legal procedure they have recently been allowed to return to the village. For the last two weeks some of the families have come to live their again. Ever since their return, they experience constant harassment by the settlers and daily new restrictions issued by the army. As for yesterday, for instance, the army, forced to allow them to stay in the spot, forbids them to use the road leading to it.

Ta’ayush activist, together with volunteers from other organizations, are with them almost every day, and a small group of international volunteers stays their day and night.

This Saturday we’ll join them in clearing the caves from which they were expelled and the ruins of what used to be their homes.

They need our help, and even more importantly – our support.

This morning the Jerusalem municipality demolished three more houses in the Palestinian neighborhoods of Abu Tor and Beit Hanina and 40 people were displaced.

One of the houses in Abu-Tor was a 70 square meter house belonging to the Shuweiki family and was a home to 12 residents. The Father of the family fainted twice during the demolition, and was hospitalized. The second house in Abu-Tor was 80 square meter house home to the Al-Qawasmi family of 6 members. The two families received an order from the municipal representative to clear out all the rubble that used to be their home within a week or else they would receive a hefty fine. The third house that was demolished by the Jerusalem Municipality, measured 150 square meters and was located in the neighborhood of Beit Hanina. It was the home of the Rajaby family, providing shelter to 22 familiy members including at least ten children. The family received the demolition order only this morning, leaving the family with insufficient time to organise alternative housing opportunities or to remove all their belongings in time. Two people, the father and one of the sons, were arrested and 2 others were injured during the demolition. A forth house adjacent to the Shuweiki family house was damaged during the demolition.

After numerous incidents of home demolitions and evictions in East Jerusalem right before Ramadan and the Jewish High Holidays, the Municipality of Jerusalem has clearly reinstated its illegal policy of house demolitions in East Jerusalem. Today’s demolitions add up to at least 12 demolitions within the course of only 3 weeks, thereby clearly stating the Municipality’s discriminatory discourse.

We urge you to join us in making an end to these racist measures in order to achieve a sustainable and just peace. Please contact your parliamentarians and congressional representatives to demand their action on the issue. If you require any more information on house demolitions in East Jerusalem or ideas of how to get involved, please contact the ICAHD office.

1. Shooting in Silwan opposite the entrance to the site of the City of David, update

In the previous newsletter, we reported an incident of shooting which occurred at the entrance to the site of the City of David in Silwan, in which an Israeli young man shot towards two Palestinian residents on 11/9/09. Our friend, Ahmed Qaraeen, a member of the residents’ committee who was wounded in the shooting, was released from the hospital two weeks ago after undergoing an operation on his leg; he is now facing an extended period of rehabilitation. The other wounded person, the child Amir Froukh, who was only lightly wounded in his leg, has totally recovered. Below is a film clip describing the whole incident:

An additional film clip about Ahmed and the general situation in Silwan(In Hebrew): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF2Fjp7ufQU

2. Criticism of the Antiquity Authority becomes an issue of public debate

The Archaeological Authority has been forced to respond: At the Archaeological Conference on New Research on Jerusalem, which took place on 15/10/09 at the Hebrew University, the Director of the Antiquity Authority devoted most of his opening words to a response to the criticism which has recently been voiced concerning the operations of the Authority. In his speech, he related to our activities in general and, specifically, to the article of Dr. Rafi Greenberg, “Quick Archaeology” in Jerusalem, which was published in the Ha’Aretz newspaper:

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1119641.html

The opening words of Shuka Dorfman, the Director of the Antiquity Authority:

Criticism of senior archaeologists concerning the increase in building activity and the co-operation with the Antiquity Authority:

During the Conference, criticism was voiced concerning the work of the Authority and the situation of archaeology in East Jerusalem by the leading archaeologists Prof. Yoram Tzafrir, Prof. Amos Kloner and Hillel Geva. The first speaker was Prof. Yoram Tzafrir. His words were aimed primarily at the building plans for the “Beit Ha-Libah (House of the Heart)”, a three-story building sponsored by the Fund for the Tradition of the Western Wall, within the area of the plaza. Following the discussions at the Conference, several articles and op-ed pieces were published indicating that the subject has begun to be an issue of public debate.

Here are some film clips from the Conference itself, and links to discussions of the issue:

3. Publication of the remarks of the Director of the El’ad organization concerning the excavation under Palestinian houses and how he “fooled” the Antiquity Authority.

Recently, Ha’Aretz newspaper published a transcription of a recorded conversation with David Beri, the Director of the El’ad organization. He reveals the way in which the excavations were carried out in Beit Ha-Ma’ayan. Excavating outside of the permitted area, without engineering supervision and while endangering the lives of the local residents are only a few of the methods which Beri describes in the recording. Listen to his words here:

Upcoming Alternative Archaological Tours
The archaeological tour “From Shiloah to Silwan” offers a unique experience of the “City of David” archaeological site located in the Palestinian village of Silwan in East Jerusalem.
This is an unusual tour because along with an introduction to the archaeological splendor of the site, it also introduces the visitor to the role of archaeology in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its impact on the residents living near the site.
The tour is guided by an archaeologist and village residents.

The English tour will take place on Friday, October 30, at 1 pm

III.

III.

Dear all,
This morning the judge, Eilata Ziskind, sentenced Ezra as follows:
- 30 days in prison
- 750 NIS fine which he will not pay and thus get extra 7 days in prison.
- 500 NIS to each of the border police officers he “assaulted”.
- 6 months if he violates law in the occupied territories in the next 3 years. The judge knew he would violate this parole.

(please notice that there’s a mistake in the article: the fine is 750NIS not 750,000)

Should his appeal not be accepted, Ezra will go to jail next month.

Thank you for your support,
The Committee Supporting Ezra Nawi

This week, Wednesday October 21st at 8:30AM (Israel time), Ezra Nawi’s sentence was read in the case against him in Ayalata Ziskind chamber, Jerusalem Court.
Judge Ziskind has convicted Nawi in police officer assault whilst two buildings were demolished in Umm-El-Cheir in February 2007.

The sentence reading was postponed from September after the Judge asked to review the possibility of “public service” as punishment. Ezra refused to attend the parole officer, continues to plea not-guilty, and refuses to accept the blind system’s impositions.
Together, we will stand in support of Ezra in court.

Micha Kurz Biography:

Micha Kurz was born in Jerusalem to parents who immigrated to Israel from Canada and the U.S. in the sixties. He was in the National Youth Movement for six years, where he trained teenagers to work as leaders in their local communities. At nineteen, he joined the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) as a combat soldier and attained rank of Master Sergeant. After an honorable discharge from the army he co-founded Breaking the Silence, “an organization of former Israeli soldiers speaking out about our service in the Occupied Territories and the moral price, the degradation of spirit, we have had to pay on both societal and personal levels while serving our nation”.

Micha has met with grassroots activists around the world and has gained perspective on the importance of effective local community organizing. He now lives between Jerusalem and Northern New Mexico and is currently engaged in creating a network for Palestinian and Israeli NGO’s grassroots groups. He plans to weave a common vision with the communities working on social justice issues.

He believes linking a global network supporting grassroots organizations in Jerusalem will eventually lead to peaceful co-existence.
