In Jerusalem
While right now, each of us independently concentrates on a specific issue, area or group of people, we have very much in common. We are all seeking to better the reality around us, through justice, environment, education, arts, public awareness… there is a shared sense of absurdity we all wish to see shift. And yet, we are constantly under budget, usually “putting out fires”, not quite knowing where it will lead next. We are very sure about what we don’t want, what doesn’t work, can’t work… but we still have a hard time talking about what we would want it to look like.
What will Jerusalem look like 5 years from now (according to us)? Considering the urgency of the issues we collectively address, and the fact that we are up against similar challenges, we must learn to take advantage of the grassroots network that exists in our area and the people around the world waiting to support it. We must become more efficient and effective as a network if we want to accomplish our long term plans.
I am writing in regards to a website that maps the grassroots organizations and projects in and around the Jerusalem area. The site is a networking tool. It provides a picture of what projects are happening on the ground now, who, and which organizations are involved, and a schedule of planed projects. It reflects where additional support is still needed, and also lets others know what we have to offer. It helps us become more efficient and effective in our work. This will help us build longer term goals and visions together, and keep track of our progress as a grassroots network.
The site will also be a connection for Diaspora communities and organizations from around the world interested in directly supporting projects happening on the ground in and around Jerusalem. There are many people around the world who would like to get involved, and would like to support the Palestinian and Israeli grassroots network. This website provides an opportunity for them to give their support where it will be most effective.
This is not an attempt to build coalitions or umbrella organizations. This network transcends political disagreements and religious differences; it distinguishes what is needed urgently on the ground. The web-site is a tool for us to hold on to our specific goals while working together on mutual visions of a more just and creatively built, shared reality in the Jerusalem area. It is for those of us using our imagination, strong will-power and sense of justice to become more effective. Many are realizing that the real work leading to change is already happening on ground levels, regardless of what the media shows. We understand that supporting the grassroots organizations is the most effective way to influence the reality for Israelis and Palestinians.
Connections are being made with supporting communities in the U.S. now. There are quite a few supporting communities eager to learn about projects like yours and others happening in Jerusalem now.
Please write a short profile using the questions in the “My Piece of the Puzzle” page. this can be found on the Home Page. The profile will represent your project and organization on the web-site, and will have a link to your web-site. If you are working with more than one organization, please write two (or more) profiles. This profiles will be used to raise awareness and support for your project.
This information will later be used to prepare for a hands-on work shop intended for grassroots workers that will take place in Northern New-Mexico at the end of May 2009. With consultants and professional help we will learn to create efficient plans and more effective projects as part of a larger network for our future activities, goals and visions.
To be sure we have all the info needed to reflect your activities and plans these are a few points to make sure to mention in the “My Piece of the Puzzle” (Home Page)
The Grassroots organizations are not alone. There are many that would support you if there was a way to do so directly. This effort will provide the opportunity to support you and your work. Thank you for what you do, and who you are. You are an inspiration to many around the world.
